The White Mountains of Arizona boasts the largest stand of Ponderosa Pines in the world. Outdoor recreation is the primary activity with exceptional hunting, fishing, horseback riding, hiking, camping, skiing and mountain biking. The HUGE Apache National Forest is never more than a few minutes away. The Gila National Forest is just across the border in New Mexico - providing an area of National Forest land roughly the size of Yellowstone Park ! • ALPINE - Considered to be one of the most beautiful areas in the western United States. The Alps of Arizona is at an elevation above 8000' and boasts one of the highest golf courses in the US - yes, the ball does travel further! The 400 or so year around residents relax with cool summers and mild but snowy winters.
• NUTRIOSO - "Nutri" residents enjoy magnificent views of 10,987' Escudilla Mountain along with Noble Mountain and Gobbler Peak. The 500 or so year around residents live at an elevation between 7500-8000'. Winters are milder than Alpine and only 20 minutes to "town".
• GREER - The 300 or so Greer residents live in the Little Colorado River Valley at an elevation above 8000'. This area is known for its fine dining and quick access to area lakes and rivers. The climate in Greer is very similar to Alpine - you'll need a snow shovel!
• ROUND VALLEY - The sister cities of Eagar & Springerville are nestled at the base of the mountains at an elevation just above 7000' with approximately 7,500 residents. This is the commercial center for the Eastern White Mountains with a hospital, banks, supermarkets, drug store and rodeo grounds. This is where John Wayne's former 26 BAR Ranch resides and the only "domed" high school football stadium in the country. Traffic is easy with only two stoplights in RV and six in the entire county. The summers are warmer than in the mountains, but air conditioning is optional. The winters are mild and snow usually melts off by the afternoon.
